Sites of Deterrence

Sites of Deterrence

Sites of Deterrence examines the environmental and architectural logic of nuclear warfare.

Each token represents a territory that contains a specific amount of uranium ore. This ore can be mined, processed, enriched and ultimately turned into nuclear weapons. Subsequently, delivery infrastructure such as missile silos and airports for bombers can be built. The territory can thus be turned into a site of deterrence by targeting and potentially hitting and destroying other sites with nuclear weapons.

Based on a reconnaissance view on each territory, the project examines the visual effects that the build up of nuclear deterrence has on the landscape as well as the decision logic of nuclear confrontation. The conditions, rules and modifications for the transformation are determined by the smart contract. The execution of these mechanisms, however, are purely the individual decisions of the token holders.
